Pan Fried Crispy Wontons with Chive & Cream Cheese Filling

Here’s a great appetizer or snack recipe for your Super Bowl Sunday party menu.  Super simple and easy, the filling includes smooth cream cheese dressed with some honey for light sweetness and chives with some toasted sesame seeds for a nice crunchy texture, and placed in Asian wonton skins which are then pan fried to crispy golden brown.  Enjoy!

  • Wonton Skins (1 pack)
  • Whipped Cream Cheese (8 oz. container)
  • Chives (1/3 cup of diced chives)
  • Honey (2 tablespoons)
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds (2 tablespoons)
  • Egg (1 beaten)
  • Peanut oil or any high temperature oil

1) Dice your chives into small pieces and place in measuring cup to get 1/3 cup quantity.

2) In a bowl, add cream cheese, diced chives, honey and toasted sesame seeds and mix until all ingredients are well integrated.

3) In a small bow, beat one egg.

4) Take one wonton and place on flat surface.  Dip a small spoon into beaten egg and stroke egg half way around the wonton skin. Take a teaspoon of the filling and place in the center of the wonton, and fold gently.  Make sure you press all around with your fingers, removing any air pockets in the wonton.

6) In a fryer or cast iron skillet, add high temperature oil, like peanut oil, and make sure you get it hot between 350 and 375 degree fahrenheit, which is frying temperature. (If you don’t have a temperature reader, then you can drop an wonton in and if it get crispy golden in like 20 seconds, then the temperature is hot).  Carefully drop in 5 wontons at a time (do not fry too many wontons at the same time because you need the high temperature to get your crispy skin).  Once wonton is crispy golden brown on one side, then flip.  Once done, place on plate with paper napkin so napkin will absorb any excess oil.

Recipe makes about 20 wontons.
